                                                                                 * Grand master Trần Xuân Mẫn

In the centre of Hoi An Ancient Town, Viet Nam, stands an ancient building at 51/2 Phan Chau Trinh Street which was built in the nineteenth century.

The building with a 240 square metre-yard was the place where many practicians from Quang Nam Province practised Traditional Martial Arts with Mr Truong Chuong, a very famous master, who moved to this building in 1925.

In 1973, Ky Son Martial Arts School was officially founded at this building by Mr Truong Chuong. At the time, Viet Nam Martial Arts Federation appointed Mr Truong Chuong as manager and Mr Tran Xuan Man, his best practician as coach of Ky Son Martial Arts School.

From 1973 to 1985, Ky Son Martial Arts School admitted over 300 practicians. Some time later on, many of these practicians became masters and they established many Marcial Arts Clubs in all parts of country.

In 1985, Master Truong Chuong left for Tam Ky City. The building of Ky Son was sold to a teacher. Ky Son Martial Arts School closed then.

In 1991, six years after Master Truong Chuong’s death, Mr Tran Xuan Man bought the building Ky Son and he has managed Ky Son Martial Arts School since then.

In 1994, the building was renewed and changed into a place for ancestors of Martial Arts where Master Truong Chuong, the founder of Ky Son Martial Arts School was worshiped. Many objects left by Master Truong Chuong such as the old instruments, weapons and books for martial arts… Besides, this building is a place to display hundreds of souvenirs from Sports Cultural Organizations and from other Martial Arts Clubs in Viet Nam as well as in other countries.

Since 1991, sixteen good practicians of Ky Son Martial Arts School have taken part in 22 National Martial Arts Competitions and in 34 competitions held in Quang Nam. They have won 80 national medals and 114 provincial medals. Most of the medals they have won are gold ones and silver ones.

At present, in the front yard of the building stands a chapel to the memory of a Vietnamese ancestor, Lac Long Quan, the founder of Vietnamese Traditional Martial Arts.

The rest of the front yard is used for Martial Arts Shows, practising calligraphy and Taichi. These activities are frequently held for visitors entertainment. Some Martial Arts Schools abroad frequently send their masters, coaches and practicians to Ky Son Martial Arts School to learn many martial arts lessons as well as exercises for health

Ky Son Martial Arts School has been recognized as one of the fifty-two ancient buildings that are preserved by Hoi An’ committee./.
